Article history: Received 18 February 2013 Received in revised form 19 September 2013 Accepted 22 September 2013 Available online 24 October 2013 A method for predicting and analyzing the tooth contact pattern, vibration, and strength of a generated hypoid gear is needed to achieve a low-noise design and adequate quality control. However, it is not easy to analyze the performance of a generated hypoid gear because the tooth flank form is complicated and has a significant influence on the overall performance. In order to solve this problem, in this research, a method for analyzing one of the gear dynamics excitations and contact condition of a generated hypoid gear that considers the measured tooth flank form is proposed. The contact pattern and transmission error are measured experimentally and are compared with the analysis results. It is confirmed that the result from the proposed analysis method agrees with the experimental result. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Predicting Depth and Path of Subsurface Crack Propagation at Gear Tooth Flank under Cyclic Contact Loading

In this paper, a two-dimensional computational model is proposed for predicting the initiation position and propagation path of subsurface crack of spur gear tooth flank. In order to simulate the contact of teeth, an equivalent model of two contacting cylinders is used. The problem is assumed to be under linear elastic fracture mechanic conditions and finite element method is used for numerical...

Gear Optimization

In this study, an optimization methodology is presented to systematically define head-cutter geometry and machine tool settings to introduce optimal tooth modifications in spiral bevel and hypoid gears. The goal of the optimization is to simultaneously minimize the tooth contact pressure and the angular displacement error of the driven gear (the transmission error), to maximize the elastohydrod...

Meshing Error of elliptic cylinder gear based on tooth contact analysis

In order to study the dynamic meshing characteristics of the elliptic cylinder gear and obtain the meshing error of the gear transmission system, the two-dimensional static contact analysis of the gear tooth surface is carried out by using ANSYS software, and the key parts of the contact area of the tooth surface are determined. Then, the dynamic meshing model of the elliptic cylinder gear is e...
